Dream Closet Design ... It's all in the planning

So how DO we plan for a custom dream closet? The same way we organize our current closet.

It begins with an inventory of what you have, what you love, and getting rid of the rest. According to the KonMari Method of tidying…“Keep only those things that speak to the heart, and discard items that no longer spark joy. Thank them for their service – then let them go.”

Fashion Show producer and stylist, Arianna Sinclair says, “Your closet should not be used as a storage.” “Take things to the cleaners and to a seamstress and only keep accessible thing that you are currently wearing.” “To protect and take the best care of your garments and items, do not overcrowd.”

Once we’ve identified the ‘keepers’ we like to categorize hanging clothes by color and then using the predominant color in our clients wardrobe, we decide on a palette. The next part of the planning is planning how the closet will be used. If you wear hats, make sure they can be reached. If you need a step stool, plan a spot where the step stool will be conveniently stored.

Sorting your wardrobe into color groups helps you find what you need quickly.

We like to showcase our client’s favorite items. Keeping them behind glass ensures minimal dust. The rest should be stored in clearly labeled boxes or bins. Lighting to showcase our favorite pieces is a constant visual reminder of those special things that bring joy, also reminds us how important it is to stay on top of the organization of this special space.

When designing the layout, things to remember are, location of light switches and power outlets and HVAC vents. If you’re starting from scratch be sure to find out where to pull electrical for built in lighting.
